Bay Lake Tower Opens Its Doors, Bringing Disney Vacation Club Conveniences to Disney’s Contemporary Resort

Nearly 38 years after Disney’s Contemporary Resort opened its doors, its modern Disney Vacation Club addition, Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, welcomes guests.  This is the seventh Disney Vacation Club (DVC) property at Walt Disney World Resort.

All 15 stories of the ultra-sleek design continue the original building’s iconic style, which opened with the Magic Kingdom theme park Oct. 1, 1971.  Bay Lake Tower complements and pays homage to Disney’s Contemporary Resort while also offering a variety of new amenities and conveniences – kitchenettes or full kitchens complete with granite countertops and modern appliances, and other homelike amenities.  In addition, most of the 295 two-bedroom equivalent villas in the crescent-shaped tower offer spectacular views of Bay Lake or Magic Kingdom.

Bay
Lake Tower, like all DVC resorts, blends Disney magic with elegant design and premier accommodations.  DVC members – and, based on availability, overnight Walt Disney World guests staying at Bay Lake Tower – can choose from a number of recreation activities and facilities, including a children’s interactive water play area, Bay Cove Pool, a barbeque pavilion, a Community Hall and two nearby tennis courts.

For easy access to Disney’s Contemporary Resort’s restaurants, merchandise shops and the monorail, the Sky Way Bridge takes members and guests from the fifth floor of Bay Lake Tower directly to the fourth floor Grand Canyon Concourse of Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

The opening of Bay Lake Tower is an exciting chapter in the history of Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

“Our resort motto is ‘Where Tradition Touches Today,’ and the marriage of our iconic resort with this elegant new Disney Vacation Club offering is a perfect example,” said Thea Sargent, general manager of Disney’s Contemporary Resort.  “Plus, with all of the enhancements we have made to the resort over the last few years – from costumes and landscaping to restaurants and merchandise locations – we offer our overnight guests and DVC members an unparalleled ‘contemporary’ resort experience.  I think this kind of evolution is exactly what Walt Disney envisioned for our resort.”

Bay
Lake Tower is the third Disney Vacation Club offering to open at Walt Disney World Resort this year, following the first phase of Kidani Village at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Treehouse Villas at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa.

“What excites me most about this tremendous growth is that we’re not only creating new accommodations but new experiences for our Disney Vacation Club members as well as our resort guests,” said DVC President Jim Lewis.  “Each of the projects we’ve undertaken at Disney Vacation Club is unlike anything previously available in our resort portfolio, and Bay Lake Tower proudly builds on that tradition.”

Overnight accommodations at Walt Disney World Resort hotels – including Disney Deluxe Villas– can be arranged by calling 407/W-DISNEY, online at

Toy Story Animated Characters Create Fun and Mania In Disney Parks

New Attraction Comes to Florida and California in 2008

It's the wondrous world of Woody the Cowboy, Buzz Lightyear and Green Army Men. And coming in 2008, guests of Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts get to ride and play inside an energy-filled  toybox of fun with the debut on both coasts of "Toy Story Mania."

Celebrating the Disney-Pixar classics "Toy Story" and "Toy Story II," "Toy Story Mania" will take the interactive ride-game experience to exciting new heights. High-tech yet rooted in classic midway games of skill, "Toy Story Mania" will match the delightful characters of the films with games that best suit their very animated personalities.

Fun for the whole family, "Toy Story Mania" will immerse guests of Disney Hollywood Studios and Disney's California Adventure into the "Toy Story" world as never before. Donning 3-D glasses, guests shrink to the size of a toy, and hop into fanciful ride vehicles that travel and twist along a colorful midway-themed route. Upon arriving at each game booth, they will aim for animated targets using their own special on-board "toy cannon."

As guests score points, they will be cheered on by favorite "Toy Story" friends like Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Hamm, Bo Peep and the Little Green Men. Hidden targets garner players extra points and lead to different levels of play.  The energy of the characters, the competition with other riders and the hilarious, unpredictable game action make this a unique experience that families will want to try again and again.

The attraction features games that audiences of all ages and skills -- from beginner to serious gamer -- can enjoy.  No matter how many times guests return to ride and play, they can be sure every ride-through will be different.  Players pair up and sit side-by-side for a friendly competition that delivers an ever-changing variety of targets and surprises.

'Finding Nemo' to Make Splash In Musical Spectacular at Disney's Animal Kingdom

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The undersea world that charmed audiences around the world in the Disney presentation of the Pixar Animation Studios smash-hit film “Finding Nemo” will come to life in an all-new musical stage show debuting at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in late 2006.

Featuring original songs by Tony Award-winning “Avenue Q” composer Robert Lopez and a cappella musical “Along the Way” composer Kristen Anderson-Lopez, “Finding Nemo-The Musical” will immerse Walt Disney World guests in the story of Marlin and Nemo, an overprotective clownfish father and his curious son, through a dazzling production that combines puppets, dancers, acrobats and animated backdrops.

The show represents the first time Disney has taken a non-musical animated feature and transformed it into an original musical production. It will be presented in the newly enclosed Theater in the Wild.

“In ‘Finding Nemo,’ directors Andrew Stanton, Lee Unkrich and the talented team at Pixar created a film filled with unforgettable characters and a story rich with honest emotions that resonated with audiences everywhere,” said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “The movie was a worldwide box-office success and an Academy Award winner.

“We are truly excited to bring this beloved story to life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in this new musical spectacular.”

During “Finding Nemo-The Musical,” Theater in the Wild will become a magical undersea environment through innovative lighting, sound, special effects and the theatrical puppetry of Michael Curry, who designed the richly detailed character puppets seen in the Broadway version of Disney’s “The Lion King.”

Principal characters such as Marlin, Nemo and Dory will be represented by live performers operating larger-than-life puppets. Peripheral characters will be realized by a diverse array of puppetry styles, including rod, bunraku and shadow.

“It is our goal to bring the undersea ‘Nemo’ characters to Disney’s Animal Kingdom in a live setting in a way that captures what is truly special about the film,” Rasulo continued. “This production will meet that challenge in a dynamic and wholly original way to bring us into the fantastical ocean world.”

The director for the new show, Peter Brosius, is artistic director of The Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis, winner of the 2003 Regional Theatre Tony Award. The Broadway “A Year With Frog and Toad,” nominated for the Best Musical Tony Award, originated at Children’s Theatre Company.

“Finding Nemo-The Musical” is the first major musical produced for Walt Disney World Resort by Disney Creative Entertainment, which has received acclaim for its productions around the world, including “Disney’s Aladdin” (at Disneyland Resort in California), “The Lion King” (at Hong Kong Disneyland), “Twice Charmed” (on the Disney Cruise Line), and “The Golden Mickeys” (at Hong Kong Disneyland and on the Disney Cruise Line).

“It’s exciting to be involved in projects that introduce a new generation of future theatergoers to the work of internationally recognized creative talent through Broadway-caliber short-form shows that all audiences can appreciate,” said Anne Hamburger, executive vice president of Disney Creative Entertainment. “Millions of children experience live theater for the first time during a visit to a Disney park.”

“Finding Nemo-The Musical” tells the story of a father clownfish, Marlin, and his son, Nemo, each on a separate journey that ultimately teaches them how to love and understand each other. The two have been separated – and Marlin will stop at nothing to get his son back, facing undersea challenges with his new friend Dory, who he has met along the way. Meanwhile, Nemo, relocated to a fish tank in Sydney, makes new friends who teach him that he’s stronger than he thinks. When news of his father’s heroic journey reaches the tank, Nemo is inspired to do whatever is necessary to escape the tank and see his father again.

“Finding Nemo-The Musical” will be performed several times daily. Admission to Theater in the Wild is included with regular Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park admission. Guest information is available by calling 407-824-4321 or by visiting disneyworld.com.

The Seas with Nemo & Friends Brings Familiar Characters to Life Inside Epcot Aquarium

The Seas with Nemo & Friends, a whimsical and visually stunning attraction for guests of all ages, is scheduled to open at Epcot in Fall 2006. Featuring technology that for all appearances has the stars of "Finding Nemo" swimming amid the live marine life of the huge aquarium in The Living Seas pavilion, the attraction is an adventure that picks up where the motion picture left off.

The undersea voyage begins aboard "clamobiles" in a colorful coral reef setting. Guests first meet Mr. Ray and his class on a field trip and soon learn that Nemo has wandered off.

The journey to find Nemo continues as familiar characters such as Dory, Bruce, Marlin, Squirt and Crush help with the search along the way. These deep sea friends inhabit a variety of vibrant vignettes, including the actual aquarium -- one of the world's largest saltwater aquariums -- which contains more than 65 species of marine life.

In the musical finale of the attraction, Nemo is happily reunited with his class and friends.

Upon exiting the attraction, guests can explore the rest of the pavilion, which is home to "Turtle Talk with Crush," the smash-hit recent addition featuring the movie's laid-back sea turtle, who interacts with guests in real-time, unscripted conversations; Bruce's Shark World, an interactive area with colorful graphics and fun facts about sharks; and live marine life in both the large aquarium and specialized exhibits.

Dramatic New Interiors Coming to Guest Rooms at Two Classic Disney Resort Hotels

Guestrooms at Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Polynesian Resort are receiving a dramatic new look including new décor, furniture, state-of-the-art entertainment technology, carpeting, lighting and bathroom fixtures.

At Disney's Contemporary Resort, room décor is being changed from the current style -- taken from the bold, bright colors of contemporary art masters of the 1950s and '60s -- to a more upscale, elegant design that incorporates muted color accents such as reds, greens and yellows with basic black and white.

Rooms at Disney's Polynesian Resort also are getting a new, more sophisticated look but will retain the classic South Seas style that has been the hotel's hallmark since 1971.

Both resorts will receive upgraded furniture elements such as flat-screen televisions and designer bedding. In addition to the room renovations, décor in the hallways and public areas also is being updated.

The renovation of both resorts, which began in May 2005, is scheduled to continue through the summer of 2006.

Innovative Airport Shuttle, Luggage Delivery Service to Remain Complimentary

Since May 2005, guests of most hotels at Walt Disney World Resort have enjoyed an innovative amenity that helps take the hassle out of traveling between Orlando International Airport (OIA) and the Vacation Kingdom.

Disney's Magical Express offers complimentary airport shuttle and luggage delivery and -- on participating airlines -- check-in at guests' hotel for domestic return flights.

Launched as part of the "Happiest Celebration on Earth," which will conclude later this year, Disney's Magical Express will remain operating as a complimentary service, Disney announced today. The company recently reached an agreement with OIA to continue the program.

Participating guests check their bags at their hometown airport, bypass baggage claim at OIA and board state-of-the-art motor coaches to Walt Disney World Resort -- while their bags are transferred to their room.

While guests flying any airline in or out of OIA may take advantage of the motor coach transportation between the airport and their Walt Disney World hotel, guests departing on participating airlines (currently American, Continental, Delta, Song, United, Ted, Northwest and JetBlue) have yet another benefit through Disney's Magical Express: On domestic flights, they can avoid airport check-in lines by checking their luggage and receiving a boarding pass before departing their select Walt Disney World hotel.

Classic Attraction in California and Florida Adding New Characters Inspired by Hit Film Franchise Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean

ANAHEIM, Calif. / ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 2, 2006) -- First the theme park attraction inspired the movie -- now the movie is inspiring the attraction.

Pirates of the Caribbean, the classic Disney theme park adventure brought to the big screen in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, is adding new characters and features from the blockbuster entertainment franchise and debuting when the next adventure begins in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Both the Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida will close the attraction in March to complete the updates in time for the opening of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on July 7. The attraction will re-open at Disneyland on June 24 and in Florida's Magic Kingdom on July 7.

The attraction will feature the addition of two of Hollywood's most infamous buccaneers, Captain Jack Sparrow and his nemesis Barbossa. Joining the wildest crew that ever sacked the Spanish Main, Captain Jack and Barbossa add an exciting new twist to the attraction's original storyline as they race to be the first to claim a cache of plundered treasure.

"Successfully adding the popular characters from the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films with the mythology of our classic attraction is an example of Disney synergy and Walt Disney Imagineering at its finest," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "These additions will result in an exciting new chapter for the attraction and an unforgettable experience for our guests, giving them another reason to come and be a part of our continuing 50th anniversary celebration."

Woven into some of the attraction's most memorable scenes, the rival swashbucklers will be seen interacting with some of the more familiar Audio-Animatronics buccaneers found inside the ride-thru adventure. Also making a guest appearance is the ghostly Davy Jones from the second movie in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. But new characters are only the beginning. New special effects will also be added to enhance the "Pirates of the Caribbean" theme park experience.

"The creative legacy of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' has come full circle with the attraction initially inspiring our highly successful film franchise and now the films inspiring exciting additions to the attraction itself," said Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. "The attraction enhancements capture the same spirit, swashbuckling humor and action that moviegoers loved in the first `Pirates of the Caribbean' which will continue with the highly anticipated new tales this summer and beyond."

Created under the direct creative supervision of Walt Disney himself, Pirates of the Caribbean is the quintessential Disney theme park adventure, a swashbuckling voyage that transports guests back to the days when pirates and privateers roamed the Spanish Main. Starring a comical cast of rascals, scoundrels, villains and knaves, the world-famous attraction sends guests of all ages on a boat ride through mysterious caverns where "Dead men tell no tales" and then into a colonial era Caribbean seaport under siege by a band of fun-loving pirates. The attraction's jaunty theme song, "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)," sets the show's light tone with its tongue-in-cheek depiction of high-seas lawlessness.

The original incarnation of Pirates of the Caribbean premiered on March 18, 1967, in New Orleans Square at Disneyland in California. Featuring more than 120 Audio-Animatronics performers, lavishly decorated sets and special effects, it's considered to be one of the most spectacular and enduring attractions ever created for a theme park. With its setting revised slightly to fit a Caribbean Plaza location in Adventureland, the attraction opened to guests at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom on December 15, 1973. More than 500 million people have experienced the rollicking fun of Pirates of the Caribbean in California and Florida over the past 39 years.

"Enhancing the classic Pirates attractions with new characters and new technology will ensure their relevance and place in Disney theme parks as timeless adventures," said Tom Fitzgerald, senior creative executive for Walt Disney Imagineering. "We're adding a layer of storytelling from the films to the attraction while retaining all the familiar elements that make it vibrant and exciting for every age group."

The Pirates of the Caribbean additions are one part of the "Happiest Celebration on Earth," an 18-month salute (continuing through 2006) to 50 years of Disney park magic around the globe that started with the opening of Walt Disney's original park, Disneyland, in 1955.

New Sunset Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Offers Up-Close Encounters With Exotic Creatures

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Whispering winds sweep across the balmy, Africa-like plain, a peaceful sanctuary at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. From balconies overlooking the savannahs, hotel guests marvel as creatures large and small roam the grasses, forage for food and play in harmony.

But now Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge concierge-level guests can actually enter this serene animal reserve for an up-close personal encounter thanks to the newly launched Wanyama Safari experience. Just before sunset three nights a week, adventurers gather outside the 1,293-room lodge with a guide who readies the group for a traditional game-viewing safari. Up to eight persons can board a specially designed pop-top vehicle for a bird’s eye view of a typical North African safari.

Safari-goers are absorbed in careful observation as the vehicle moves along the Uzima savannah, the first of three picturesque savannahs that horseshoe the majestic lodge. A pair of female reticulated giraffes from Northern Kenya pause from browsing and gracefully move within feet of the vehicle. Guests’ cameras and videos are poised to capture an unforgettable encounter with the tallest of the land mammals.

Joe Kalla, the resort’s animal curator, says the safari strives to recreate the essence of an African experience with free-roaming wildlife in an authentic environment. “We wanted to give our guests a close look at our animals, understand how we manage the animals and offer a glimpse into the training of the animals,” said Kalla.

The hotel’s savannahs are home to more than 200 mammals and exotic birds representing a cross-section of the African palette -- bongo, greater kudu, zebra, wildebeest, spiral-horned antelope, impala, African spoonbills and pink-backed pelicans, to name a few. Even the once-endangered national bird of South Africa, the blue crane, has found a home at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

“One of the real challenges was introducing animals and choosing the right ones to live in harmony in this environment,” said Kalla. A customary South African “sundowner” rounds out the safari experience. Fresh-squeezed guava/pineapple juice, dried beef, figs and nuts are shared with guests in a ceremonial moment.

The second part of the journey leads to the resort’s signature restaurant, Jiko-The Cooking Place, where a savory South African feast awaits safari-goers. Flavors of Africa fill the air in a memorable meal blending regional spices and grains.

The experience begins with a basket of warm kalamata olive flatbreads and African dips, followed by maize tamales with herb and white truffle oil, lentil pastilles and cinnamon-spiced beef rolls. Entrees such as oak-roasted filet of beef and chermoula-basted and roasted chicken with mashed potatoes, olives and roasted garlic are served family-style. Popular South African wines are paired with each course, which includes a sweet display of desserts

The Wanyama Safari is offered to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge adult concierge-level guests on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 4 p.m. The 3 ½-hour experience, including dinner, is $150 per person, with a maximum of eight persons. For reservations, contact 407/938-4755.

Mickey, Donald, Other Disney Characters To Appear in 3-D in New Magic Kingdom Attraction

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Disney magic meets Disney music in a new 3-D film spectacular debuting in 2003 at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World Resort.

“Mickey’s PhilharMagic” will star Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other favorite Disney characters animated in a way they’ve never before been seen: grand, glorious, in-your-face three dimensions.

“We’re really excited about this new attraction,” said Al Weiss, president of Walt Disney World Resort. “Guests love the Disney characters and films, and this gives them the chance to take a magical ride right into the world of Disney animation.”

The “Mickey’s PhilharMagic” cast will include Mickey and Donald, as well as Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” Aladdin and Jasmine from “Aladdin” and Simba from “The Lion King.”

Set in the PhilharMagic Concert Hall, which replaces “Legend of the Lion King” in Fantasyland, the eye-popping 3-D experience will unfold on one of the largest screens ever created for a 3-D film, a 150-foot-wide canvas. Complete with in-theater effects, the attraction will immerse guests in the richly animated world of the Disney characters.

The Walt Disney Company has experimented with animating the Disney characters in 3-D before, most notably in “Working for Peanuts,” a 1953 Donald Duck/Chip 'n' Dale cartoon short, but never on a scale as grand as “Mickey’s PhilharMagic.” The attraction is being produced through the combined efforts of Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Feature Animation.

“We’re always exploring ways to take 3-D to the next level,” said Tom Fitzgerald, executive vice president and senior creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering. “From ‘Jim Henson’s Muppet*Vision 3D’ to ‘Honey, I Shrunk the Audience’ to ‘It’s Tough to be a Bug!’ we keep looking for new ways to allow guests to become a part of the action and story. “

‘Mickey’s PhilharMagic’ will be the most animated, energetic and magical 3-D show we’ve ever created!”
